KNDF Area of Operations

KNDF operates in six focal points within the Lake Victoria basin, Kenya. The focal points span through 28 administrative districts namely:

Focal Point 1
It covers five districts namely; Transmara, Kuria, Gucha, Kisii and Nyamira. The Focal Point has a membership of 50 CSOs that focus on water and sanitation, environmental management, agriculture, energy and HIV/Aids. The main environmental challenge in this Focal Point is catchment degradation.

Focal Point 2
This Focal Point covers four districts i.e. Migori, Suba, Homa Bay, Rachuonyo. It has a membership of 77 CSOs. The main environmental challenge in the Focal point is deforestation and massive soil erosion. Widespread water hyacinth infestation of Lake Victoria is the other major concern in the region.

Focal Point 3
The Focal Point covers five districts namely: Uasin Gishu, Transzoia, Bungoma, Mt. Elgon and Lugari. In this Focal point, KNDF has a membership of 70 CSOs. The region covers the Sio- Malaba-Malakisi river basin, an area where KNDF is soon undertaking a joint partnership program with NBI-Sio-Malaba-Project on community capacity building for the local communities. The region suffers extensive deforestation of the catchment area.

Focal Point 4
The Focal Point has five districts that include Kakamega, Teso, Vihiga, Butere/Mumius and Busia. It has a membership of 67 CSOs. The region share part of Sio- Malaba- Malakisi river basin. Key environmental concerns are flooding in Budalangi area and unsustainable agriculture.

Focal Point 5
The Focal Point comprises of five districts i.e. Nandi North, Nandi South, Buret, Bomet and Kericho. It has a membership of 90 CSOs. The Focal Point experience high rainfall and is the source of major rivers in the Lake Victoria basin, Kenyan portion. It suffers from extensive deforestation due to land clearance for agricultural space, settlement and wood fuel.

Focal Point 6
The Focal Point covers four districts namely; Bondo, Siaya, Nyando and Kisumu. It has a membership of 76 CSOs. Water hyacinth infestation, flooding and massive soil erosion are among the key environmental challenges in the area. KNDF has designed a water hyacinth and catchment re-habitation programmes that will seek to address some of the concerns.
